Hey you. Yes, you. We know you're tired, but you need to drop that sugar-filled, triple-shot, toffee-nut latte you’re about to guzzle and listen up.
Things like calorie-laden coffee drinks, candy, sugary sodas and energy drinks spike your blood sugar (and those extra empty calories can contribute to weight gain). But remember, what goes up, must come down. The more you expose your body to this fluctuation, the more depleted and lethargic you will feel.
What to do? If you want lots of natural energy without all the stimulants and sugar, eat unprocessed, real foods (and drink water!). Following are five things that boast cleaner, stronger, energy-boosting power.
Whole Eggs
Whole eggs are an excellent source of protein that offers long-lasting energy. Egg yolks are rich in B vitamins, which help convert food into energy. A recent weight loss study found that those who consumed two eggs and toast for breakfast lost more weight (by 65 percent) and had more energy than those in the control group.
Water
Three out of four Americans are chronically dehydrated, which is a shame since proper hydration can dramatically increase physical and mental performance. An easy fix? Take a 20-ounce water bottle with you each day and refill it every 3 to 4 hours.
Celery
Noshing on celery is a brilliant way to boost energy while conserving calories (hello, only 6 calories per stalk!). Packed with fiber and vitamins B and C, celery also helps to balance potassium and sodium levels. Snack on celery with hummus or peanut butter for even greater energy boosts.
Beets
Beets provide a burst of energy without packing on calories. They are fat free and loaded with all kinds of goodies: vitamins A and C, phosphorous, magnesium, calcium, iron, potassium, niacin, biotin, fiber and folic acid to detoxify the body and help produce new cells.
Quinoa
Carbs have certainly gotten a bad rap over the years. Truth is, carbs are fuel and they’re imperative for energy. Try quinoa, a gluten-free hearty grain that will fill you up and keep you energized.
